I thought I might share this letter with you, regarding a Master Class I was asked to give, working fifteen to twenty minutes each, with twelve singers, while I was singing The Merry Widow, with the Portland Opera.
I started by giving, the audience of some 80/90 attendees, my Breathing/Support technique-my first Tip, in August 2007-effectively doubling the size of every participants voice, in about ten minutes, just as I did with my impromptu Master Class at Juilliard, a few years before. That got their attention ...
Each participant sang sixteen or so bars of a selected aria and then I discussed their individual strengths and areas that needed attention. Live, on stage ... from taking a "wobble" and turning it into a smooth flowing "vibrato", to double or tripling the size of the voice with increased support and a sense of lifting and growing through a phrase-with flexible breath-pressure on demand-as well as explaining how the tongue is the instrument of focus, high notes and pure vowel ... and I added some high notes to each of the young and eager singers. And ... we had a lot of fun doing it! The result was the following letter. RF
